For over 70 years, City of Auburn employees had not enjoyed the benefits of air conditioning. Aiming to maintaining the original historic appearance of the building and grounds, BDA designed a geothermal system to rectify the problem. The new heat pump equipment in the architecturally important council chambers and mayor’s office are located in existing recessed wood window sills. Coring of clay tile interior walls and composite concrete floors create paths for the piping and ventilation air, now hidden from view by the finish work.
BDA secured a $72,000 grant from NYSERDA’s new construction program to use geothermal tech-nology, which covered roughly half the cost of the loop field.
