Robert Moses State Park - Massena, NY

Bathhouse, Visitor Center & Lifeguard Building Rehabilitation for Robert Moses State Park

Beardsley Architects + Engineers provided full architectural and engineering design services to support the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP) in the restoration and adaptive reuse of an existing beach complex. Services included site evaluation, a schematic design and conditions report, design development, final construction documents, and limited construction administration.

The project focused on converting existing buildings for new uses while preserving the original 1950s architectural character. The former food concession building was transformed into a new bathhouse. The existing bathhouse became a multi-use visitor center with camper registration, a supply store, office space, and public information areas. The original lifeguard building was restored to its intended function and reconfigured for park storage needs.

Additional site improvements included the restoration of a covered walkway leading to the public beach, an ADA-compliant ramp, and complete utility upgrades including new water, sewer, and electrical systems. The project also included ADA-accessible parking improvements, with updated paving, striping, and signage.

This project received the American Public Works Association (APWA) New York State Chapter 2010 “Public Works Project of the Year” Award for Historic Preservation and Rehabilitation.
