Electric Utility Facility Renovation
Beardsley Architects + Engineers partnered with the Massena Electric Department (MED), a public utility, to provide full building and site design services for phased improvements to their main facility. The project spanned from schematic design through construction administration, enhancing operational efficiency, customer service, and staff comfort.
Full-Scale Design Services
The multi-phase project included a 3,200 sq ft cold storage warehouse addition, a 4,000 sq ft administrative office and customer services addition, and renovations to approximately 4,500 sq ft of engineering offices and line-workers’ support spaces. Site improvements expanded and reorganized service and customer circulation, parking, and secured yard access.
The first phase featured a custom steel-framed, pre-manufactured metal building with deep pile concrete foundations, secure gates, and optimized truck access to the existing storage yard. The second phase added a brick-clad, single-story wood-framed office structure with a customer service lobby, billing counters, administrative offices, and an executive boardroom. Additionally, renovated spaces included an updated engineering office suite, staff break room, modernized line-workers’ locker rooms, and dedicated record storage.
Efficient Mechanical Systems
Both the new addition and renovated areas are efficiently served by a ground-source geothermal heating and cooling system, supported by a centrally located mechanical room. These updates breathe new life into the original 1950s steel and masonry facility, positioning MED to better serve the Massena community for years to come.
