Since the events of 9/11, the Northeast Air Defense Sector (NEADS) has grown significantly in its personnel, equipment, and mission. The administrative building they occupied was isolated from the primary NEADS air space monitoring building and inadequate for Homeland Security. To alleviate the problem, the Air National Guard enlisted the services of Beardsley to develop the plumbing, fire protection, HVAC, electrical, data network, and site development for a new facility. The new 27,000 sq ft facility consolidates all NEADS personnel and security staff to a common site to improve operability and functionality.
To coincide with two-part construction funding over two fiscal years, the project will be completed in two phases. Phase I consists of 10,800 sq ft of security offices, supply storage, arms vault, training space, and building infrastructure for both phases. Phase II involves 16,200 sq ft of office space, meeting rooms, and site development including a new entry drive, enlargement of the controlled site perimeter, parking lot expansion, and a stormwater management system.
Site development includes perimeter vehicle barrier walls, cable fences, security gates, and set back distances meeting the stand-off and perimeter control requirements of the DOD’s Antiterrorism and Force Protection Guidelines. The new facility also includes sustainable design features meeting the client’s target of a gold level LEED rating.
